 Abstract:  Dorothy Davis Kates was employed by the Historical Records Survey of the Works Progress Administration (WPA) in Cleveland, Ohio, during the 1930s; serving as a Superintendent of the Cuyahoga County Archives Survey Project, as an Area Supervisor, a Project Planning Assistant, and eventually as the Director of the Historical Records Program of the WPA in Cleveland. Kates was also active in many civic and arts organizations throughout her life, including the Print Club of Cleveland, the Cleveland Society for Contemporary Art, and the Women's City Club of Cleveland. Beginning in 1966, she chaired the Mental Health Committee of the Women's City Club, helping to organize lectures and community projects concerned with mental health, drug abuse, juvenile delinquency, teen pregnancy, child abuse, and prison reform issues. She founded the Women's City Club Mental Health Institute in 1976. Kates was also active in local Democratic Party politics, particularly in the presidential elections of 1960, 1964, and 1968. Other organizations in which she participated included the Women's Forum of Greater Cleveland, Le Cercle des Conferences Francaise, Organization for Rehabilitation through Training, Federation of Jewish Women's Organizations, and the Jewish Community Center. Kates also was the author of articles, reviews, essays, and radio plays. The collection consists of correspondence, minutes, essays, newspaper and magazine articles, play transcriptions, unpublished manuscripts, notes, lists, rosters, bylaws, reports, brochures, itineraries, programs, memoranda, cards, campaign flyers, newsletters, legislative bills, publications, surveys, schedules, regulations, directories, awards, and certificates.

 Abstract:  Local chapter of the national patriotic society. The Western Reserve Chapter was founded in 1891 in Cleveland, Ohio, by a group of women led by Catherine Hitchcock Tilden Avery. In addition to planning and implementing some of the earliest Americanization programs, the DAR was also involved in providing nursing care and emergency relief to victims of wars and floods. The collection consists of minutes, reports of delegations to the Continental Congress of the DAR, resolutions in memory of deceased members, notices of events, correspondence, addresses given to the DAR and other groups, reports of events of the Society of the Army of the Tennessee, and committee reports.

 Abstract:  The Junior League of Cleveland is a women's service organization founded in 1912, in Cleveland, Ohio. The organization's constitution states that the "object of the League shall be to foster interest among its members in the social, economic, and civic conditions of their community and to make efficient their volunteer service." The organization served the community through various activities such as musical and theatrical performances, volunteer drives, and philanthropy and among other activities to respond to the communities needs. New membership requirements are also explained.  Abstract:  Cleveland Basebelles was incorporated in Cleveland, Ohio, in 1965 by Jessie Semple O'Donnell to serve as a booster club for the Cleveland Indians Major League Baseball franchise. Besides promoting attendance at Cleveland Indians games in Cleveland and other American cities, the Basebelles also became a fundraising organization for charities such as the Salvation Army and the Make-a-Wish Foundation. The collection consists of a calendar, correspondence, a membership card, and five scrapbooks.

 Abstract:  The Academy of Medicine of Cleveland Auxiliary is a group for spouses of physicians who are members of the Academy of Medicine of Cleveland, Ohio. It was created in 1940 as the Women's Auxiliary of the Academy of Medicine of Cleveland and Cuyahoga County Medical Society. Since its inception, the auxiliary has assisted the Academy of Medicine of Cleveland in many of its projects designed to promote and improve public health. The organization also submits a monthly column to the Cleveland Physician, a publication of the Academy. The collection consists of minutes, scrapbooks, and Presidents' Books, created each year by the standing president. The Presidents' Books include committee reports, correspondence, mailing lists, membership lists, programs and souvenirs of the year's events.

Recipients of this fundraising have included the Cleveland National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP); Karamu House; the Eliza Bryant Home; Forest City Hospital; the Jewish Welfare Fund; and, the Phillis Wheatley Association. The collection consists of 66 photographs organized by subject. It also includes 300 slides and 19 negatives.

Smith, who was chapter historian during the early years.

 Abstract:  The Music and Drama Club of Cleveland was a women's club devoted to promoting interest in, and appreciation of, the combined arts of music and drama. The club was founded in 1904 in Cleveland, Ohio, and originally was called the Music and Drama Study Club. They held monthly meetings featuring performances, primarily by members, and awarded scholarships to students at the Cleveland Music School Settlement, Cleveland Play House and Cleveland Institute of Music, as well as donating funds to various musical organizations in the community. The collection consists of minutes, annual reports, scrapbook materials, and clippings, as well as questionnaires, scripts for skits, and publications concerning scholarship awards.
